A white wedding dress or gown is symbolic of todays weddings. But that has not always been the case. Throughout history the wearing of special clothing was the focus of the celebration.

1) The first American wedding traditions can be traced back to the British settlement in Jamestown. There is evidence of multicolor wedding dresses available in those early days. Black being especially popular in Scandinavia.

2) White became the preferred color for both the informal wedding dress and formal wedding gown after the famous royal wedding of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1840. The wedding dress with train and veil became the new trend of the 1870's.

3) The luxurious floor length clothing worn by brides in the middle of Depression Era America, became officially known as the Wedding Gown.

4) In the 19th century most American couples were wed by a clergyman at the home of the Bride, with an informal ceremony. The Bride wore the best dress she had, could afford or could make.

5) Over the centuries, the amount of material a wedding dress contained also was a reflection of the bride's social standing.

6) Most assume that the color white was intended to symbolize virginity, even though the color blue is connected to purity. The white gown is in fact a symbolic Christening gown.

7) Red silk wedding saris are the traditional garment choice for Brides in Indian culture.

8) Wedding dresses reflect the changing styles of our times. In the late 1960's mini wedding dresses were popular. Due to non-traditional, non-first-time weddings, and women who are marrying later in life, today's Brides are tending not to follow the latest trends.

Wedding Centerpieces - Four Tips For Stunning Centerpieces by Stephen Badiali

There are many details that go into planning a wedding reception. After you find a location for your reception, book the caterer, and hire the entertainment, your focus can turn towards other topics like wedding centerpieces.

As with all wedding details, wedding centerpieces come in a wide range of choices. From expensive and over the top to cheap and modest, you will have to search for the option that is right for you and your wedding celebration.

Set your budget and start thinking of wedding centerpiece ideas. As the saying goes, sometimes less is more, and centerpieces are no exception.

If you are having a simple, elegant wedding you would not want to have lavish, obnoxious centerpieces that excessively stand out. On the other hand if you are having an elaborate wedding affair an extremely simple centerpiece may look out of place.

Here are four tips for finding the perfect wedding centerpiece:

Look For Unique Vases or Items For Flowers

Flowers are the most popular choice for centerpieces, but that doesn't mean you can't be creative. Try finding unique vases instead of ordinary clear glass vases. There are many options including different color glass vases and unique shapes.

Instead of vases you can also choose other items to hold your flowers like birdcages or fishbowls. Try adding items to the containers like stones, pearls or other objects that match your theme.

Think Seasonal For Centerpiece Ideas

The season that you are getting married can spark some great, creative ideas for wedding centerpieces.

For a Fall wedding consider incorporating pumpkins into your centerpieces. Options include small carved pumpkins that can double as wedding favors and pumpkins filled with flowers or candles.

Summer weddings have many items that can be used for centerpieces. These include seashells, lighthouses and other nautical items.

For a Winter wedding, add pine cones or holiday items.

Get Creative

Think outside of the box and come up with something unique. If you have an overall theme to your wedding, try incorporating something from that theme into your centerpieces.

For example, if you are getting married in a city like New York or Chicago, try tying in something unique from that city. New York is called The Big Apple, so you could somehow incorporate apples into your centerpieces.

Florists, caterers and wedding planners are great resources for centerpiece ideas. They have a lot of experience and have seen a lot of things, so bounce your ideas off of them.

Surviving the First Dance - Ten Tips by Meredith Stead

Most couples intend to dance the traditional first dance, but most of them also know nothing at all about dancing! So as the big day approaches their sense of panic increases. Avoid anxiety by following a few easy tips.

1. Plan ahead: You're planning everything else associated with your wedding, why not your first dance? Ideally you should begin practicing 6 to 12 months ahead of time.

2. Turn to professionals: Learning to dance is surprisingly painless. If you can't afford private lessons at a local studio, look around for group classes (high schools, colleges and community centers often offer courses). Or, buy an instructional videotape -learn at home and avoid the worry of looking awkward in front of others.

3. Have options: If you are undecided about your first song, or can't pick one, check the list of wedding dance songs available on this site. Try practicing to two or three different songs that both of you like, and choose the one that feels most comfortable.

4. Less is more: You need not dance to the entire song (remember, dance professionals don't). Your DJ can cut the song or your band can play a shortened version…..or you can even just have it fade out. Bottom line: you'll look better dancing for two minutes and doing five terrific moves, than dancing for five minutes and doing twelve poorly executed moves.

5. Decide on a song version: Once you've picked a song, make sure your DJ or band knows how you want to hear it. For instance, don't assume your band will play the song just like the Frank Sinatra CD you've been practicing to. It's a good idea to give them a copy of the version you like, or to get a recording of their version, so that you are practicing to "the real deal."

6. Think about where you're dancing: If your wedding will be outdoors, install a dance floor - it's pretty hard to spin in mud. Or on grass. If the dance floor at your reception hall is smaller than your bathroom, maybe you'd better rethink that waltz - it takes up lots of space. Try to practice in a space that's similar in size to your reception hall.

7. Think about what you're wearing: If you have a mermaid dress you'll look terrific. You'll also be taking very tiny steps…. bear that in mind when you plan the first dance. Similarly, if you have an off-the-shoulder gown you won't be able to lift your arms over your head………consider that before you put in all those spins.

8. And speaking of what you're wearing: practice your dancing as if it's the big day. Grooms: wear a jacket and dress shoes. Brides: wear a long skirt, (unless you're planning that mini-wedding dress!) and your actual wedding shoes. This will accomplish two things: it'll break your shoes in, and it will give you a sense of security about your ability to manage them come the actual reception. If you're worried about getting them dirty, protect them with an old pair of athletic socks.

9. Don't expect perfection: Nobody at your reception is anticipating that the two of you will put on a show. You're not a professional dance team - and if you are, why are you reading this?! While the two of you are learning and practicing, you are bound to make the occasional mistake. Just stop, talk it out, and try again.

10. Express yourself: Know your own comfort level, and that of your groom. If you don't like a song, don't dance to it! If you don't like a certain move your instructor shows you, say so. (Be polite, though!) It is, after all, your day and your dance. If you are happy and comfortable you will look wonderful, so that should be your goal.

Wedding Video: All Videos Are Not Created Equal…

Choosing a professional wedding videographer can be complex and confusing. With so many terms like, "digital," "non-linear editing," "DVD authoring," …how do you choose and feel comfortable with your decision?

Your special day is arriving (and quicker than you realized) and the last thing you need to worry about is whether or not you have hired the right professional to capture your day. Of course you've visited their website and viewed their demo, but is that enough? The answer is "no."

No matter whom you choose you will not know the professionalism and skill of the videographer until AFTER the ceremony.

First, let me clarify a few terms before I go any further:
Non-linear editing - use of computer vs. VCR. This does not necessarily have any effect on the final footage, its just one method of editing.
DVD authoring - if a videographer provides this service, your final product should look something like you would rent at "Blockbuster Video" with menus and chapters. This is a lot more than just transferring footage to DVD.
Digital Video - this is a process of how footage is captured. Digital and analog do not necessarily dictate quality. There can be bad digital video just like there can be bad analog video.

Now that you have some knowledge of the video industry terms…there are a few questions you should ask yourself when choosing a professional videographer:

a) Did the videographer seem knowledgeable?
b) Was the videographer able to answer all of your questions to your satisfaction?
c) Was the videographer professional, i.e. did he/she come prepared to your initial meeting with price lists, contracts, demos, etc?
d) Was the videographer attentive when you asked questions?
e) Does their product and service justify the pricing?

A professional videographer should be familiar with all industry terms and products. He/she should be able to describe in detail the services they are providing.

Regardless of pricing, contact the videographer directly and see EXACTLY what they are offering.

Each option should be clearly outlined and easily identifiable on their demo, instead of just a way to pad their pricing for a few extra moments in your video.

Don't get caught up in "price wars." If you have to question the pricing AFTER you have been provided a detailed description of their service, then look elsewhere.

Always ask for a copy of a wedding demo. Most videographers are happy to send this to you free of charge. It's not really important to receive a demo that encompasses an entire wedding. Just look for key elements that are important and will help ensure your receive the best product. Such as:
a) Was the picture clear?
b) Was the camera steady?
c) Were graphics and music included in the demo?

Also, be aware of whether or not you prefer a DVD or VHS copy of your wedding. Some videographers only offer VHS copies. Your best option is to go with someone who offers both. Additional copies of your wedding should also be available at any time after your wedding date at a reasonable price. Make sure you ask how much additional DVD or VHS copies are or if they even offer additional copies at a later date.

The bottom line is "you get what you pay for." Remember, your wedding day is a unique, on-time moment that can never be recaptured. Don't cut corners for a cheaper product and then have regrets that can never be rectified.

6 Reception Mistakes You Need To Know About Before Your Wedding

In our over thirty years of experience providing music and entertainment we've seen ALOT.... some really unique events, many elegant and classy and some destined for failure before we even got involved.

Every Bride wants that fairytale wedding - everything goes off perfectly and you both ride off into the sunset on your Honeymoon.

But, in reality, many Brides and Grooms, overlook some mistakes that we see occur commonly:

1) Trying To Copy A Wedding
You've seen your perfect reception on "Four Weddings" or on another one of your favorite wedding related TV shows, bridal magazine or attended a friends wedding. Now you want yours to be "just like theirs"! STOP!! Even if you have a lavish television budget and can duplicate the locations and vendors... it's NOT going to be the same!

We've had clients express that they want exactly the same music as so-and-so's wedding. Even if we could, we can't re-create the atmosphere and the excitement of any previous event. Add YOUR personal touches so that you let your guests know that this is YOUR day.

ATMOSPHERE PRODUCTIONS experience can help you with those unique elements that will make your reception fun, classy and different.

2) Leaving Early
The plan is, as part of the scheduled "events", 45 minutes before the official end of the reception the Bride & Groom would like to invite everyone outside to light sparklers or see fireworks. Then, the guests watch as the Bride & Groom get into the limo and head off to the airport for the Honeymoon. Everyone is then expected to return to the reception and "party" for the last half hour without the Bride & Groom.

In reality, this is a slap in the face to all your guests who have come far and wide to see you on your special day. Once you leave, your guests WILL leave.... that's their cue! Stay until the end of the reception and say"Hello" and "Thank You" to every guest. They are there to celebrate YOUR marriage.

3) Keep Your Vendors Informed
You've made subtle changes to the reception time, changed the order of the introductions, added a few surprises that your guests will surely enjoy plus changed the floor plan to better accommodate more guests. On it's face, these changes might be minor, but to NOT inform your day-of-event vendors is a crime!

Last minute changes do occur. We need to be prepared and can help you orchestrate things much smoother, if we know about them before it's too late. We CAN help - this is what we do best!

Your facility, officiant, photographer, DJ, video photographer, florist, baker, limo driver ALL need to be on the same page. Make sure ALL vendors know what you want and clarify times and details as soon as they change or YOU make a change. ATMOSPHERE PRODUCTIONS contacts and review details the Monday or Tuesday before each event for this specific reason.

4) No Specific Seating Arrangements

The plan is to have everyone sit where they feel comfortable and not at a designated seat. You may have extra tables and extra room to do so, so why not? Because, for some strange reason, your guests who are "young at heart" will want to sit right next to the speakers.... and then complain that it's too loud.

Always have a seating plan. Don’t seat those that are the "young at heart" directly in front of the entertainment. Older generations are at a wedding typically to socialize with their family and friends. If they cannot hear each other talk, an unhappy situation WILL occur. So, seat them close to the wedding party and away from the dance floor and entertainment.

5) Only One Type Of Music
We get more and more requests to play just one style of music - all Country, all Hip-Hop, all Techno! Although I'm still waiting for an all Disco and 80's Dance Party request, we decline most single genre themed weddings. Why? Because not EVERY guest will be enthralled to listen to 5 hours of the same music.

There are many different types of people in the world and they include your family and friends. Pick selections that cover different age groups and styles of music. We'll typically play these earlier and then later in the evening, we can then pull out your specific favorites.

6) Having Too Much To Drink
Keep in mind that the only time the Bride & Groom eat during the long wedding day is at the wedding reception. Alcohol will affect you much faster, when there's not much food in your stomach. Try and eat throughout the day and watch how much you drink. Don’t get drunk and obnoxious. You want your guests to remember how beautiful the Bride looked, not how she acted. Enough said!

I am a professionally trained Lifecycle Celebrant ™, having studied the art of ceremony and ritual through the Celebrant Foundation and Institute.

As an ordained, Interfaith Minister, I happily serve couples of all backgrounds and beliefs. In other words...it's not about what I believe, but what the couple believes. I am open and affirming, welcoming gay/lesbian/straight couples.

My goal is to create a personalized ceremony that reflects the personalities of the couple I serve, honoring their faith traditions if that is important to them and creating a feeling of community and intimacy, no matter what size of wedding.

I am not a stuffy person nor do I create stuffy ceremonies. I feel everyone should walk away from a wedding ceremony feeling lifted by the experience, with a smile on their face, and having a greater understanding and appreciation for the couple and their story.

I have a background in theater, having worked as an actor for years in NYC so I have lots of experience in communicating with a group of people and also the understanding of timing, nuance, and the knowledge of how things logistically should unfold to create a cohesive experience.

I see myself as a couple's storyteller and I absolutely love what I do! I never show up for a wedding without knowing the names of the family members and wedding party. This is such an important transition for a couple and their families and it makes so much difference when a couple knows that their officiant actually cares about learning everyone's names...and it means a lot to their families as well.

Some tips for couples when thinking about their wedding ceremony:

Realize that the ceremony is the heart of the wedding day, therefore, it is worth your effort to find an officiant who will provide a personalized ceremony that celebrates you and your story!
The tone of your wedding ceremony sets the tone for your entire wedding day, so choose an officiant who has great energy and who can communicate effectively with a group of people. Do you like the sound of her/his voice? What training in public speaking do they have? Do you like them? All these things are important...you should really feel great about your officiant, so don't settle for just anyone!
Your officiant should be accessible to you, listen to you, and seek to tell your story with grace, humor, truthfulness and purpose.

Vincent Ingala & Jonathan Fritzen

We have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving... in the Northeast this year we have endured floods, a tornado, earthquake, hurricane and most recently a freak snow storm blizzard in October. I am particularly thankful to have all my family and friends safe and well during these past months.

I am also thankful to have taken the Friday after Thanksgiving (Black Friday) off and with my friend, fellow broadcaster, former WTIC-FM air-personality Keith Alan and our wives, we ventured due North for a little smooth jazz.

Keith and Vincent's parents Leo & Dawn have known each other since the Disco era, club nights and mobile DJ events with "The Sounds of Leo". So this was much like a reunion... old friends reminiscing about the good 'ole days!

Once again WEIB 106.3FM's "Smooth, Soulful & Afterwork Cool Down" presented a spectacular evening featuring Jonathan Fritzen & Vincent Ingala. Both artists have been featured in this series before - Jonathan in October and Vincent in November of 2010. Now they would perform together for the first time at The Holyoke Hotel & Conference Center.

We've had the pleasure of seeing Vincent Ingala on numerous occasions, so it was a delight to see Jonathan Fritzen live. Our good friend from the UK, Rich Edwards show SmoothGrooves live on 96.6 GFM's (listen online every Monday 2pm EST) was the first to bring Jonathan Fritzen's sound to my attention. Jonathan's 2008 "Love Birds" and "V.I.P" & 2010's "Diamonds" CD's were available for sale this evening, so we snapped up a copy of each. These CD's are available from Jonathan's official website or Amazon.

All the way from Stockholm, Sweden and in his mid-twenties, keyboardist Jonathan Fritzen was experiencing his first Thanksgiving with family in the States. This certainly was going to be one that he would never forget, as he ventured to the stage first and took command with "Diamonds" & "Feelin' The Groove" before establishing himself with the now standing room only crowd to the hauntingly beautiful "Midnight Secrets".

After a short break Vincent joined Jonathan on stage for a 45 minute set that brought everyone to their feet. The rousing "K-Jee" was pure delight to three seasoned club DJ's (Leo, Keith and myself), which was taken to new heights with a special percussion break, that Vincent & Jonathan turned into a battle of the drums and cowbells, in the middle of the song.

They also teamed up on "Dance With Me" and to no one's surprise on this Friday night, jammed to the current #1 smooth jazz track "Friday Night." Another highlight was seeing these two talented young musician blow away the audience with the sultry "Fly Away" from Jonathan's "Diamonds". Vincent playing the sax parts to perfection as laid down on the CD by saxophone star Jessy J. No Vincent Ingala concert is ever complete without "It Is What It Is" from his debut "North End Soul."

Yet again the stars are shining for the up and coming talents in the smooth jazz arena with Vincent Ingala and Jonathan Fritzen in the spotlight. A collaboration on some future project just seems inevitable, if their on stage presence is anything to go by. We wish continued success to both these talented musicians.

Marine Corps Family Foundation: Operation Santa

Our friends Marjorie and Craig are once again sending care packages to our brave Marines in Afghanistan for the Marine Corps Family Foundation, Operation Santa. Again, we are lending our support….we hope you can too:

"Each year our care packages drive has grown. Last Christmas we sent 372 care packages - more than 6,000 pounds of snacks and personal care items were shipped to the Marines in Afghanistan. Each care package is shared by at least 20 Marines and is filled with items that are impossible to get or not readily available in a war zone:

Personal Care Items:
deodorant, body powder, foot powder, tooth paste, tooth brushes, razors, hand sanitizer, baby wipes, cough drops, hand warmers, soap, shampoo, vitamin C., white socks, chapstick, sunscreen, Lysol wipes, eye drops, q-tips, lotion, shaving cream, band aids.

Snacks (need to be individually wrapped):
Rice Krispie Treats, snacks mixes, sunflower seeds, beef jerky,chewing gum, nuts, Granola bars,soup mix, mac and cheese single serve, cereal bars, hot chocolate, pringles chips, candy, freeze dried coffee, cookies, powdered Gatorade.

Miscellaneous:
playing cards, dice, poker chips, zip lock bags, AA batteries, sewing kit, paper back books, magazines, paper, pens, crossword puzzles, puzzle books, toilet paper, international calling cards.

It is so important for these Marines to be remembered at this time of year. They are away from home, away from their families. They will not be home for Thanksgiving dinner, they will not wake up Christmas morning to open presents with their families.

Please help me help the brave young Americans during this holiday season.

We will be packing boxes and accepting donations through Friday December 23rd.

Atmosphere Productions: Lake Of Isles: Jaimie & Tom - November 4th

A week after the historic October freak snowstorm that wiped out power to much of Connecticut, we ventured to North Stonington in the Southern part of the State. The Lake of Isles seems to have fared much better than the rest of the State, with little power outages or tree damage.

Jaimie and Tom had made plans to have a traditional indoor Ceremony at The Lake of Isles long before the snow storm. So all of our planning centered around coordinating the Ceremony with the Cocktail Hour and then moving smoothly into the Reception for dancing.

The Mother of the Bride, Debbie was exceptional in helping with the details and made some wonderful suggestions, including music selections that proved to be right on the mark. From our first discussions I knew it would be a pleasure working with Debbie in planning this wedding. Thanks!

31 Memorable Things You Can Learn From "Four Weddings"

Have you ever watched that reality TV show called "Four Weddings" on TLC? Atmosphere Productions recently appeared on this reality television show for the season finale ".. And A Ball and Chain", with Eric and Amanda's wedding at The Spa at Norwich Inn. You can download and watch the episode directly from Amazon.

If you watch enough of them, you really can get a sense of what is important and what is not at a wedding. Having a bigger budget is not always the way to guarantee a bride wins the honeymoon. Spending your wedding budget wisely and paying attention to the flow of the day is really what makes a wedding GREAT.

Here are some of my observations from watching this wedding TV show:

The Ceremony:

Make sure everyone can hear you exchange your vows- watch out for distracting surroundings and have someone professionally microphone the ceremony.
Keep it short - but not too short (15-30 minutes)
Make it personal - no one wants to hear a generic exchange of "I Do's"
Be on time. If you are late starting the ceremony - it will impact your entire day's plans.
Dress up your ceremony site - give it that "wow" factor
Having your ceremony outside? Have backup plans in case of bad weather. Do not chance it - if there is a chance of rain - just fall back to your rain plans. The same goes for high temperatures, low temperatures, extreme humidity and wind. Do not chance it. Plan around it.
No one likes random people watching the ceremony- keep it private

The Cocktail Hour:

People love a change in scenery between the ceremony, cocktails and dinner.
Make sure you have enough space - do not overcrowd your guests.
Give your guests places to sit and relax
Verify that there will be enough bartenders on duty. (1 for every 50 guests)
Keep it upbeat and entertaining - set the tone for the rest of the event during your cocktail hour.
Food. Food. Food. Make sure there is enough for your guests and give them more choice than just cheese and crackers

The Venue and Meal:

Give your guests options for meal choice.
Most people hate buffet lines - but "station meals" are OK
Do not drag out the meal and bore your guests.
Keep toasts SHORT as to not impact dancing time. Try to have them completed by end of dinner.
Older guests can be volume conscious - keep volume appropriate so people can talk and mingle.
Air conditioning should be set so room is cool enough so people can dance without passing out due to heatstroke.
Make your event flow - your entertainment and wedding planners can help you with this. Do not listen to your venue - they are concerned with food service and not the flow of your party.
Pay attention to "reception aerobics" - you do not want your guests standing up, going over here then back to their seats then standing back up, etc. Make activities make sense.
Ever been to an event where there were lines for the bathrooms? You should plan for about 1 stall for every 25 guests.

Dancing:

No one wants to wait 3 or 4 hours before dancing starts.
Pace the festivities so you do not bore guests and you do not do everything all in one lump (people only have about a 10 minute attention span)
Personalize your entertainment and be involved
No one likes it when the bride and groom are missing during the reception – keep group photos to a minimum during this time
Once dancing starts – do not interrupt it – not for speeches or desert stations
Dim the lights and set the mood for dancing
Notice the lighting... uplighting around the room... dance floor lighting
Create memorable moments with your entertainment (special send off, flash mob, highlight friends with special songs)
Everyone loves a photo booth
Nothing kills the party mood like a bad DJ

The wedding day is the BIG day in every woman's life, so as early as the engagement is officially announced, planning the perfect gown should be your priority, remember that all eyes will be on you.

The 10 Worst Habits Of Horrible Wedding Guests

A week or so ago, we posted a quiz on our blog called "Are you a Bad Guest?", because year on year we see brides and grooms deal with so much drama that has nothing to do with planning the wedding and everything to do with guests who manage to make a day about others into an activity about their own needs.

Sadly, the worst behavior is typically saved for the actual reception itself. My belief is that the offensive guests usually aren't self-aware enough to realize that they are being rude or inappropriate. So, to quote an Oprah-ism, "If you know better, you do better", I thought I would prepare a simple check list of 10 things to not do if you are a wedding guest. These are all culled from real life experience, no fiction here.

1. Don't wear white... unless you are Pippa Middleton or a guest of Kim Kardashian and were asked to do so.

This seems like common sense, but you would be amazed at how many times I've seen guests show up in white, or near white dresses. Probably the worst case of this was when a bride's future Mother in Law arrived at the church wearing a white gown, but that's a story for another time. In any case, there is a full spectrum of tones that you can wear to a wedding, including black... so why not just leave white for the bride?

2. Arrive at the time on the invitation.

There is a myth, particularly in New York, that the "real" start time is actually a half an hour after the invitation time. It isn't really. It's at the time that was carefully selected and it would be appreciated if you got there at that time. And, if you do arrive late, please, please DO NOT walk in, see that the ceremony is happening and then exclaim loudly "Oh My God! Did we miss it? But Ceremonies NEVER start on time." They actually do. And this one did, so just be quiet and move on with it. Similarly, while it is appreciated that you didn't want to be late, it isn't always appreciated when you arrive an hour before the invitation time either. We all recognize that you want to "beat traffic", but killing time is what Starbucks' are for.

3. Arrive with the people to whom the invitation was addressed to.

No, it wasn't a mistake that your children's names weren't on the invitation. When your envelope arrived and it didn't say "and guest" it actually was completely clear "whether or not you could bring a date?" (the answer is no, because it didn't tell you to on the envelope).

4. Don't bring a boxed present with you.

Yes, it is true that there are some bulky items on wedding registries like lamps or toaster ovens or ice cream makers and what have you, and it IS the right thing to do to purchase the couple a present. The wrong thing to do though is to bring that present with you to the ceremony and reception. It's inconvenient and you don't get extra credit for showing up with a gift. You have a year to send them a present, so just order something or the registry and have it sent to them.

5. Some people will have been asked to make toasts, if you aren't one of them, please do not try and make a toast.

First of all, speeches at weddings are generally the low light of the night. Secondly, the couple almost always carefully selects the people who are invited to speak at the wedding. Third, if they didn't choose you, no matter how amazing you think your words of wisdom might be, you should keep them to yourself.

6. Similarly, do not make requests of the band or DJ.

Hmm. How do I say this politely? Someone paid for this band or DJ and they took the time to hire professionals AND to review the songs that they wanted played and not played. They did not pay this person or group of people to be human juke boxes, no matter how badly you may want to hear Beyonce or what have you. And, part two of this is, please don't, don't, don't ask to sing with the band, it doesn't matter how much everyone loves your version of "Delilah" or "Mony, Mony."

7. Don't expect special food.

If you have dietary restrictions or allergies that are very severe, it's probably a good idea to give someone a heads up when you respond to the invitation. If you have super severe dietary restrictions, it's probably a good idea to bring your own snack or eat before you arrive in case you don't like what is presented to you at the event. It's totally reasonable to expect something for you to be there, but not rational to assume that if you are a Vegan with a gluten allergy that you are going to be thrilled with the special dish that is presented to you. Carry a Vitacost bar or something like that in case you aren't happy instead of complaining about it.

8. Don't complain to the bride and groom at the wedding.
When I had my own wedding many moons ago, we had a catering mishap at the reception and it took way too long to get food out to the floor. For me, as a professional, it was a horror that I tried to not let traumatize me. For most of my guests it was a fabulous excuse to keep drinking without being interrupted by the nuisance of food. Except for my Aunt Fran, who wasn't content complaining to the bartenders, waiters, my friends and my family. She just couldn't help herself and had to walk up to me while I was on the dance floor, pull me away and tell me that she was hungry and mad about it.

9. Don't Complain to the Bride or Groom after the wedding either.
A few days before my last client's wedding the groom rang me anxious to know my opinion on bathroom attendants. I told him I didn't think it was necessary, but was curious what brought it up. He told me that one of his colleagues had a huge, black tie reception a few weeks ago and that his aunts kept calling his colleague to complain that there weren't any bathroom attendants. WHY they would feel that this complaint merited post-event attention is beyond me, but the point is, it wasn't appropriate. Even if it was the worst wedding you've ever gone to, you weren't invited as a critic, and they don't need your constructive criticism. Chalk it up under "not the best night ever" and move on with your life.

10. Fornicating.

I'll leave it at that. Wait until you get home. Please. No area of a wedding is private enough for this.
