Pastime Diversions - What To Do With Your Out-of-Towners

As a lover of Jazz music, from playing Jazz/Funk records in the clubs in the late 70's to working with the late Jazz legend and Hartford resident Jackie McLean's daughter Melonae (yes "Little Melonae" is about her), then Music Director and Afternoon Drive-Time host at R&B, Soul & Jazz station WKND in the late 80's and early 90's, I've always appreciated the sheer delight of outdoor Jazz festivals.... talk about "cool and smooth jazz".

It was during this past weekend's 2010 Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz, sitting along the hillside in the scenic Bushnell Park, that I realized that there is an awful lot to do in and around the Hartford area and Connecticut as a whole, during the busy wedding season.  If your planning a reception that involves out-of-towners you can show them a good time with these area activities:

The Connecticut Science Center:   You can't miss this impressive new structure in downtown Hartford near the Riverfront.  Plan to spend a whole day with activities for the young and the young at heart.

Essex Steam Train and Riverboat:  Harken back to a bygone era with a tasty meal as the train, then the riverboat, winds it way through some of the state's most beautiful countryside.

Lake Compounce: The oldest continuously operating amusement park in the US, featuring the all wooden roller coaster "Boulder Dash." If your into more thrill seeking rides take a short trip up Interstate 91 North to Agawam, MA and visit Six Flags New England.

Mystic Seaport: Walk the decks of old wooden ships in America's largest maritime museum.. it is the museum of America and the sea.  While your in the area stop off at The Mystic Aquarium and see Dory and thousands of her marine life friends - up close and personal.

Mohegan Sun Casino and Foxwoods Resort Casino:"Take a chance, make it happen, Pop the cork, fingers snappin', spin the wheel round and round we go.." Yes, it is the Wonder Of It All!  The largest casino in the world with thousands of slot machines, gaming tables and dining options.

Taste of the Caribbean: During West Indian Week in August this is a not-to-miss event in downtown near the Riverfront... try a hot Jamaican Pattie!
