Atmosphere Productions: Trends in Wedding Dresses: 2012

The bride in her gown is the focal point of any wedding. (Admit it: nobody cranes their neck during the Wedding March for a better look at the groom’s tux.) Little girls dream about their wedding dresses before they’re even interested in boys. But when a wedding really looms in your future, how do you choose that one perfect wedding dress?

Start by looking at current trends in wedding dresses. For 2012, designers are inspired by sources from Hollywood royalty (think red carpet) to real royalty. One trend you’ll spot in today’s bridal gowns is the use of illusion: sheer fabric that provides coverage while giving the illusion of bareness. Often used at necklines, it’s also found covering the backs and shoulders of gowns that are otherwise cut low in the back.

Speaking of which, designers have tuned in to the fact that brides have their backs turned to their guests a fair amount of the time—during the ceremony, during dances. They’ve made the most of that by adding “back interest” to dresses. Forget large, clunky bows; think sheer lace with beaded embellishments or elegant floral appliqués.

Strapless dresses are lovely, but cap sleeves are both classic and of-the-moment. These small, shoulder-covering sleeves draw the eye upward, elongating the body. If you’re self-conscious about showing your arms, or want coverage during the wedding ceremony that can be removed during the reception, you’re in luck: elegant lace capes or capelets are popular this year. Another flattering trend is corseted dresses with cinched waists, and they enhance any body type.

Drama and glamour are available in abundance in wedding dresses in 2012. Some of what you’ll find: glittering crystal beads, plunging V necklines and daring leg slits, even fringe. Color is even more popular than in previous years, with accents or entire dresses in blush and taupe making an appearance. The white aisle runner is your red carpet, and you’ll be the unquestioned star of the show.

Current trends are only the starting point of your journey to the perfect dress. What takes a dress from beautiful to breathtaking is the ease and confidence of the woman wearing it. The dress that’s right for you, regardless of current fashion, is the dress that makes you feel like a queen. And like true love, even if it doesn’t come in the form you expect, you’ll know it when you find it.
