How Do I Select The Color Scheme For My Wedding?

The color scheme will be one of the earliest decisions you’ll make about your wedding, before you pick a menu or hire a DJ. Your color scheme will inform everything from invitations to bridesmaids’ dresses to flowers and cocktail napkins.

Color is the first thing that will strike the eye of your guests, and one of the things they’ll remember the longest. Therefore, choose your color scheme wisely, but not necessarily conservatively.

Over the Rainbow

Gone are the days when brides chose one pastel color, and it was echoed everywhere. As a result, rainbow weddings no longer hold sway, with each bridesmaid in a different pastel… Brides have, in that sense, gotten over the rainbow.

If you love pastels, an updated way to use them is to accent them with a deeper shade of the same color, say, lavender with deep amethyst. However, If you don’t love pastels, there’s never been a better time to go bold in your wedding color choices.

Modern weddings please the eye with two, maybe three striking shades. For instance, yellow and gray together are elegant, bringing both simplicity and brightness.

One summer wedding we attended featured hot pink and orange. Bouquets were nosegays of Gerbera daisies in both shades, while huge pomanders of pink or orange carnations festooned the reception hall.

Another bride we know found inspiration in a peacock feather, and chose its iridescent teal, purple, and golds for her colors, with a few real peacock feathers here and there to pull everything together.

Brown is the New Black

Black and white weddings are always classic, but brown is an updated twist on black. Consequently, it pairs well with many colors, notably petal pink, turquoise, and mint green.

Brown adds richness while avoiding black’s starkness. In addition, chocolate-brown satin makes for an sleek and sophisticated bridesmaid dress.

And imagine the dessert possibilities when brown is one of your wedding colors: chocolate-iced petits fours drizzled with icing in whatever color you’ve chosen to complement the brown.

Shades of the Season

It’s always appropriate to match your wedding to the colors of the season: russets and golds, for instance, beautifully echo the shades of a Connecticut autumn. Ice blue, accented with crystals, is elegant for a winter wedding in New England.

Red and green are obvious choices for Christmas, but be judicious.  Above all, there’s a fine line between being festive with your color choices and having it look like Santa’s Workshop exploded in your reception hall.

In conclusion, whatever you do, choose colors that bring you joy and express who you are, and you can’t possibly go wrong.
