What's it all about....? A Line Dancing History (Part Two)

Image
So you made it through last weeks part one….. Did it change your mind on those over played wedding songs that you love to hate. Here’s some more trivia: Da Butt: Sung and performed by E.U (Experience Unlimited) from the 1988 Spike Lee movie “School Daze”. The song has it’s own dance, which involves simply shaking your butt when instructed by the lyrics.  Spike Lee directed the video for this, and even appeared in it, shaking his butt. This is one of the biggest hits with the “go-go” sound – a fun mixture of dance, rap, and funk. “Go-go” has been popular in the Washington, DC area since the ’70’s. The Achy Breaky Heart:  Sung by Billy Ray Cyrus from Flatwoods, Ky, who bought a guitar at age 20, then played in local bands named Sly Dog and the Breeze. He spent 1984 to 1986 in Los Angeles, looking for a recording contract and supporting himself by selling cars.  Next he lived in Huntington, W.Va., a...

Some of these are over played wedding songs that you love to hate….. but some do have a back story that may interest you.  That may not change your mind to add them to your wedding song list: The Chicken Dance:  This unique Polka is often considered an Oktoberfest standard.  Stories claim that the song was written in the 50’s by Swiss Accordion player Werner Thomas in Davos, Switzerland while tending a flock of Ducks and Geese.  Originally entitled “Der Ententanz” (The Duck Dance), the tune crossed the Atlantic via traveling Polka bands and became “The Chicken Dance”. The dance was popularized in the United States in 1981 during the Tulsa, Oklahoma, Oktoberfest by the Heilbronn Band from Germany. They wanted to demonstrate the dance in costume but there were no duck costumes available anywhere near Tulsa. At a local television station, however, a chicken costume was available which was donated for use at the festival. And th...

5 Frivolous Wedding Details that will Rack up your Wedding Budget by Cori Locklin

Image
As you plan your wedding, you will find that around every corner lies another opportunity for a costly add-on or upgrade. Many brides are quick to nod yes to every seemingly fabulous idea and little extra presented to them. Hey – when youre spending upwards of $30,000 – whats another $300? Its an easy conclusion to make when swept up in the chaotic sea of wedding planning. But if you’re on a budget, the easiest way to stick to it is to just say no. For what seems now like an idea that you absolutely cannot forego will eventually wind up as just another unnoticed wedding detail that buried you further into wedding-induced debt. Here are some popular wedding details and extras that you can live without, and neither you nor your guests will be the wiser: The Champagne Toast: Almost every reception site offers to pass a champagne toast to all of your guests for a $200-$400 fee. Dont do it – its a waste. Many of your guests will simply take a sip and set the glass dow...

I Have A Gripe.....

Image
….. about a few Wedding Officiants who show up ten minutes before an outdoor wedding ceremony. As the bride & groom, you are expected to arrive in a timely fashion for your ceremony.  When you arrive, you expect the seats to be properly placed, flowers in order and the isle and alter to be ready to go.  In a Church setting, it is the priest or rabbi’s responsibility.  At a banquet facility, some of those responsibilities fall on the banquet manager.  So, what is expected of the officiate or JP? Showing up 10 minutes before the bride is scheduled to walk down the isle is inappropriate, but all too common.  As the officiate, you most likely were involved in the rehearsal. Don’t get me wrong… Not ALL Wedding Officiants are the same.  We know and recommend some wonderful and highly professional Wedding Officiants here . Someone who cares about their work and YOUR ceremony should arrive a minimum of 30 minutes PRIOR to guest arri...
